Heroes Recap: Chapter Fourteen: Distractions

Peter is still trying to come to terms with being an apprentice to The Invisible Man (who has the clever name of Claude, like Claude Rains - get it?). It seems that Claude just likes to walk around and disrupt the world, while Peter is a little antsy, because he'd like to learn how to control all these powers that he's absorbing. It doesn't seem that Claude is on the same schedule.

After a bit of haggling - which is basically a nice way of saying that Peter is begging for some real teaching - Claude agrees that it's time to see what Peter can do on his own. Sure, Peter can pick up the powers while Claude is nearby, but can he hold onto them while Claude isn't right there? So why not see if he can do it on his own? Sink or swim, you know? So Claude grabs a lady's purse, shoves it in Peter's hands, and walks away. Peter, naturally, blows it, and rapidly becomes visible again. He's so busted, and his skills are not getting better.

In the padded room, Niki is nervous about letting Jessica out, even though the doctor insists that it will be okay - the straps can hold an elephant to the chair, she says. Yeah, this will end well. Still, she's convinced Niki, so Niki calms down and lets Jessica out, and it... ends badly. All she has to do is look down, then look up again and Jessica is in the house. The straps are gone, the taser does dick, and the doc is down for the count.

Sylar finally gets to throw his game on Mr. Bennet, because once Mr. B shows up at the paper factory to see what happened to Sylar to cause him to be dead, and looks under that sheet, he realizes that it is, in fact, not Sylar, and by then it's too late. He's locked in the room where Sylar was, and it is Sylar-proof, so it seems like he'll be staying a while.

Jump to NYC, and Simone is getting worried about Peter, since she hasn't seen him for a while (catch that, did you?). She's so frantic, in fact, that she's relying on Isaac to help find him. The heroin-chic one, who now seems to be fairly clean, hasn't really seen him either (there it is again), but he'll keep his eyes open. Not that that will help at all. How can you see someone who is invisible?

After that quick detour, it's back to Texas, where Claire-bear is becoming increasingly suspicious of daddy, and she's really wanting to know more about her mom. So she ditches school - with the permission of her mom - to go find out all about manatees. Only, she isn't going to find out about manatees, she's headed to the trailer park to find out about her real mom. And that's when things get just a little interesting. But we'll get back to that.

Speaking of parent-child relationships, Hiro has a whopper on his hands. It seems that his father, fresh from Japan - or somewhere - has come all this way to tell Hiro that he needs to come home and do the right thing, which is to lead the company out of the dire situation in which it has found itself. Things must be really bad. Would you want Hiro to lead your corporation from the brink of doom? Luckily, he also brought Hiro's sister, who does have a business head on her shoulders, and Hiro, thinking quickly, manages to get her roped into the job instead, so that he and Ando can get back to the task at hand - finding the sword.

After this brief interlude, we head back to Texas, where Claire's mom - her adoptive mom - has a visitor. No, it's not really someone from the paper factory, it's Sylar! Unfortunately, he's not as good as making stuff up if it doesn't involve super powers, and after just a couple of minutes, he's on the ropes, so he starts throwing her around the place - but by then, Mr. B has come home and starts shooting things (Sylar, however, gets away). Before long, like a scene out of Men in Black, a whole team of people comes in to fix everything in the house, and The Haitian comes in to wipe Mrs. B's memory once again.

As this is happening, Claire meets her real momma, who shows her a secret - that she can start fires, without needing any matches or anything. Claire shows her that she has a secret of her own, and they have this real special bonding moment. Claire is just getting going, however, because she wants to know about her pop know, but that catches her moms off guard, and says that it will have to wait until next time. Maybe then we'll find out who her real dad is.

Back in NYC, things are heating up, as Simone and Isaac continue to talk it out, and the lesson plan from Claude takes full effect. Since Peter has all this stuff crowding his brain, Claude figures it's time that Peter see what everyone else is doing while he's not around, so he shows him how Simone and Isaac relate while he's not there. Peter is floored that she takes off to have dinner with Isaac, and while he's not paying attention, Claude decides to seize the moment.

Since he has flown before, he figures he can again. He shoves him off the building. The idea being that when he needs to do so, his body will remember how. Unfortunately, this doesn't work. However, Peter's body does remember that it can heal itself, which is good, because he crashes into a cab way below. So at least he doesn't die.

In Las Vegas, it seems that Jessica, though she about killed that doctor, manages to get released from the hospital. Looks like Linderman has some work for her. When she gets home, Micah wants to play Scrabble with his mommy, but doesn't seem to realize that he's playing with Jessica - or he doesn't let on, at any rate.

On Odessa, Claire and Zach return home, only to get Claire busted for skipping school. It seems that the memory wipe that her mom just had caused her to forget that she gave her permission to head out of town for the day. Whoops.

Cut to the trailer park, where Claire's birth mom makes a phone call to Claire's father, and says that she needs to talk to him, because their daughter just showed up on her doorstep. They need to talk. Surprise. It's Nathan.
