Lost Recap: Par Avion
Though I am frankly beginning to believe that this show might be for the birds, I will continue to write dutifully. For now, anyway.
So the episode opens with a back-story from Claire, of all people. I have to say that I don't recall ever seeing anything about Claire's history before. Maybe there was some, but I just can't remember seeing it. So either there wasn't any, I haven't seen it, or it just wasn't very memorable.
But there she was, in all her black-haired glory. Huh?
That's right. Claire's fair hair, as black as could be. It seems that she had wrecked her car. Or someone crashed into her. The details are a bit fuzzy, you see. And poor Claire, always so put-upon. But her mother is in the hospital, and unlikely to recover. Luckily, someone is footing the bills.
So one day, Claire goes into the hospital to find that her mother has a new doctor. But wait, that isn't a new doctor at all. We've seen him before. It's Christian Shephard (father of Jack). Holy crap! What is he doing there? Well, it seems that he is the one who has been paying the bills, because (wait for it)... he is the father of Claire.
Yes, Jack and Claire are brother and sister. Wow. That doesn't really mean anything, and it's not like they were hooking up on the island or anything, but it is an interesting twist to our little tale, to say the least.
Back on said island, the away team of Kate, Locke, Sayid, Rousseau and their new prisoner Mikhail are looking for The Barracks, whatever that is. Of course, they don't all agree that they should keep Mikhail alive the whole way there, but what fun would it be if everyone agreed all the time?
Just about then, they reach these massive pylons, scattered across the countryside. The map that Sayid appropriated from the station that blew up last week says that this border exists all the way around The Barracks, so they're going to have to go through them somehow. As Kate reaches out to touch them, Sayid grabs her, and then Mikhail answers the kill him (or don't) question by running through them. He dies. End of question.
To be consistent, it's odd that Rousseau has never seen these on the island. Has she really been here for 16 years? Or is she just a plant? I'm thinking the latter. The survivors of the flight have been here for 90 days (give or take) and know more than she does. Something has got to be up.
Anyway, everybody else chops down a tree, hops over the pylon, and gets down safely. That was easy.
Back on the beach, Claire-bear comes up with an idea. She wants to catch a bird, write a note on it, and hope someone finds it. Sort of like carrier pigeons. There is no mention of how her note will be waterproof, but I'll let that slide. Just as she (and Jin and Sun) go to catch a bird, Desmond decides to go boar hunting, scaring away the birds.
This in turn leads to Claire following Desmond on a wild goose chase, and finding out all about Charlie and his potential Date with Destiny™. We'll see how that turns out.
For now, Claire eventually manages to keep Desmond from hunting boar long enough to catch a bird, write a novel on a piece of paper, attach it to the bird, and send it off. I'm wondering how they know the bird will even know to leave the island. We'll see what happens. It will probably just fly to the other island. Maybe they'll send a note back: Hi Claire, this is Ben. Have a nice day!.
