American Idol Recap: Top 11
Now things are rolling, and we're down to eleven. The girls are now in the majority after last week's show dropped Brandon Rogers from the competition. Not that that is a surprise.
This week, the songs come from the British Invasion.
Melinda Doolittle
As Long As He Needs Me by Shirley Bassey
Stephanie Edwards
You Don't Have to Say You Love Me by Dusty Springfield
Gina Glocksen
Paint It Black by The Rolling Stones
Lakisha Jones
Diamonds are Forever by Shirley Bassey
Blake Lewis
Time of the Season by The Zombies
Sanjaya Malakar
You Really Got Me by The Kinks
Chris Richardson
Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying by Gerry and the Pacemakers
Haley Scarnato
Tell Him by The Exciters
Chris Sligh
She's Not There by The Zombies
Jordin Sparks
I (Who Have Nothing) by Ben E. King
Phil Stacey
Tobacco Road by The Nashville Teens
The remaining Top 11 came out singing the songs of the British Invasion and while LaKisha Jones seems like she is the early front-runner, I think she has some competition. Melinda Doolittle has to get some confidence, but she really has some vocal chops, and if she can get what she needs to step to the front, she may challenge LaKisha before this is all over.
As to the rest of the crowd, I'm just not sure. I really like Jordin Sparks as well, even if she does have a stripper name, but I think that her age just might do her in before we get to the finals. She has one heck of a voice, but I think we'll see her trip before it's done, where a couple years of experience might help her.
On the guys side, I don't know that there is any talent at all. I liked Chris Sligh during the auditions, but I have to confess that was mostly due to his sense of humor. I don't think he has the vocal chops. Now I'm leaning more towards Blake Lewis. I don't know if he can do it with the beat box style, but he seems to have a real voice in there if he can only find it.
The rest of the crowd is just middle-of-the-road. Actually, that's not true. Several are lower than that. But they certainly aren't better.
For the bottom this week, I'll pick Sanjaya again (how did he make it this far?) and Haley (she's only there because of her legs). The third spot is a toss-up. I'd give it to either Chris or Stephanie. I think both are decent, and neither stands out. I'll pick Stephanie because I think that Chris is marginally better. Haley heads home.
Update: There were actually only two in the bottom this week (no mention of why that was). It was Chris and Stephanie, and Stephanie went home. One of my worse picking weeks ever. Maybe next week will be better.
