Lost Recap: Expose
In Enter 77, we found that Hurley and Sawyer like to play ping-pong. They must really like it. A lot. Because they are still playing when Nikki (that blonde girl you didn't see until a few episodes ago, but she must have been around for a while) comes running out of the jungle, mutters a few words, and drops to the ground, apparently dead.
The guys follow the trail into the jungle and find Paolo (the guy she always hung out with) lying there, apparently dead as well. The good news is that these two, who really added almost nothing to the storyline, aren't going to be around any longer. The bad news is that no one knew them well enough to have any idea why they are suddenly dead. I guess we'll have to look at their back-story.
We start in a strip club. I swear. But a few seconds later, the director yells "cut" and we aren't in the strip club any longer. Ah well. It seems that Nikki is guest-starring on the hot action series Expose, but her stint is over - because she was just shot, and she couldn't really have been wearing a vest, since she didn't have many clothes on.
So she heads home to hang out with the producer (a really old guy) and his new cook. Hey, I recognize that guy - it's Paolo! But maybe this is just where they met. The new cook makes dinner, and a few bites in, the old guy heads face-first into his plate. Before long, Nikki and Paolo are talking like they've known each other forever and they sure don't look like they just met. They are trying to break into a safe. I guess it's safe to say they've been planning this for a while.
They get what they are looking for, which is a really small bag, so it must have something valuable in it, and they head out. Next we see them at the airport, and they are in the airport, and Shannon and Boone start arguing, and naturally Nikki and Paolo say that they never want to end up like that couple. Of course, Shannon and Boone aren't a couple, but you know that is just foreshadowing, and that Nikki and Paolo will be just like them.
Fast-forward to the island, and now Nikki and Paolo are looking for each other, and the next thought is "what happened to our suitcase?" Apparently they can't find it, and neither can they find the diamonds inside. So they spend the next couple of seasons (of show-time) looking for it, and during that time, they turn into Shannon and Boone, with neither one trusting the other.
What we as the viewers get to see that no one else does is that one day, Paolo finds the case in a pool, and he doesn't tell Nikki. Paolo hides the diamonds inside one of those Russian dolls that hides inside another doll, inside another doll, inside another doll, and then he hides those inside the bathroom in the Pearl station. But then he can't make up an excuse to get back.
Instead, he tells her to stop looking for the case (and the diamonds), and just enjoy their time together.
Eventually, Locke heads back to the Pearl, and Nikki is going, and Paolo thinks it's his chance, so he goes too. He gets the doll out of the crapper and then he has to figure out what to do with them.
The bag slowly fades from their memory, and becomes one of those "aren't you glad we decided to skip that" things that couples talk about, but then one day as they sit on the beach, Nikki notices that Paolo is chewing Nicotine gum - which came from the bag. And she knows he's been lying to her. Then it's really on.
Nikki takes Paolo into the jungle to show him her "surprise", and it's a jar with some spiders in it. Paolo is laughing until Nikki tells him about how the spiders bite and paralyze you. They don't kill you, they just slow your body down so it looks like you're dead - not even a doctor can tell the difference (getting that eerie feeling yet?). Then Paolo starts getting scared, and realizing that perhaps he should have told her earlier. That's when he feels the first bite.
It's not long after that Nikki realizes that her plan isn't working, as she gets bitten too, and she takes the diamonds and runs. She buries them (Sawyer finds them later, then gives them up when cornered), and heads for the beach. She tries to say "paralyzed", but the guys can't understand what she says. They just think she says "Paolo lies" or mutters something. And that she is dead.
Everyone buries the two unknowns, who are now more known, and as the last shovels of sand cover their faces, Nikki's eyes pop open. Then we see the mound of sand covering them. Sweet. Nice ending to get rid of these two useless characters. The story had little to do with the island in general, but it was a fun tale.

I don't think Niki and Paolo are dead. I think Vincent (the dog) is gonna bury them out and someone is gonna see that they're still alive.

That's an interesting theory, and though the island would certainly lend a little leeway to them being buried under sand for longer than is normal, I think it's been too long.
Though it's probably difficult to determine exactly how long, we know that it's been a number of days - after all, on the Season 3 finale Through the Looking Glass, we saw Vincent along with the rest of the survivors headed towards the radio tower.
As magical as the island is, I'm not sure if they can survive under the sand for a number of days. I suspect - and really, I hope - that it's a way to get rid of a mostly couple useless characters. Yet we'll see. I've been wrong before!
