Jericho Recap: Winter's End

Hawkins comes in from burying Sarah and is greeted by Sheriff Jimmy, who wants to know if he's seen Sarah. No sign of her. Then Hawkins goes to bury the big bomb, and Jimmy shows up again. Still no sign of her. Apparently some people found a body out in the woods, and Jimmy thinks Sarah might be involved. Hawkins jumps on the opportunity and agrees that she might have been, but he doesn't know for sure.

That's when Jimmy wants to talk to Darcy about it, and starts to wonder why he hasn't seen her around. Hawkins seriously looks like he's about to kill Jimmy at this point, but instead of that, he decides that he'll tell him the truth - or at least some version of it - and tells Jimmy that he and Darcy are having some marital problems. That seems to get Jimmy to lighten up a bit, and he turns into Dr. Phil, and offers whatever help he can give.

I guess it's the week for domestic problems, because down the street at the clinic, April collapses with some sort of pains, and it turns out that the baby isn't doing too well. That in turn means that April isn't either, and since she's the only sober doctor they have, it could be a problem. Jake goes to get Kenchy, figuring that a drunk doctor is better than no doctor, but Kenchy is still pretty torn up about Rogue River, and he doesn't even want to attempt to operate without the right equipment (which he doesn't feel he has).

But Jake being Jake, he manages to convince Kenchy that since this is April, and since this is Jericho, things will be different, and he can make it work, so they get going. After about three days of operating (which is probably only a couple of hours, but it seems like it's been going on for a while), Jake's mom makes a remark about not being able to hear the heartbeat of the baby, and Kenchy says that it hasn't been about the baby for several hours, that he's trying to save April.

At this point, we know that even April probably isn't going to make it, and then Kenchy can't take it any more, so he leaves her there. Jake has to go out and get him and tell him that he knows that she's going to die, but that people need to believe, so he has to try, and do what he can, so Kenchy goes in, does what he can, stitches her up, and... she dies. It does indeed look like the purge of characters is on in an attempt to save the show.

Meanwhile, New Bern has arrived to deliver the windmill - though they didn't bring Heather along - and now Jericho has decided that they want ten more. With a glint in their eye, New Bern says that they can do it, but they want 10% of the spring crop. Stanley tells Gray that they can do it - they'll never know if they don't get 10%, at which point New Bern says that they also need 10 men to help build them. It's like they are playing back-and-forth constantly. It's awesome!

Stanley and Eric (who has decided he can't stay in Jericho right now) head to New Bern, along with eight others, to build windmills. I don't have a problem with Eric leaving, as he's mostly useless, but Stanley? That sucks. I hope they aren't getting rid of him, too, but right now it seems like a fire sale on characters - is the show doing that badly?
