American Idol Recap: Top 8

Gina Glocksen left during last week's tribute to Tony Bennett, so we're down to eight. Who will stay? Who will go? Hopefully we're going to finally see a bit of action.

With Jennifer Lopez joining the show to teach the contestants a thing or two about Latin Music, it could certainly be interesting - if nothing else, we should be able to stay awake.

Melinda Doolittle
Sway by Dean Martin

Lakisha Jones
Conga by Gloria Estefan

Blake Lewis
I Need to Know by Marc Anthony

Sanjaya Malakar
Bésame Mucho by Andy Russell

Chris Richardson
Smooth by Santana and Rob Thomas

Haley Scarnato
Turn the Beat Around by Gloria Estefan

Jordin Sparks
Rhythm is Gonna Get You by Gloria Estefan

Phil Stacey
Maria Maria by Santana

Of course there was plenty of Gloria Estefan, with at least three contestants providing songs from the popular latin singer. But the real surprise was perhaps Blake, who sang a song from Marc Anthony - maybe best known as Mr. Jennifer Lopez.

Overall, the performances weren't that great. While I like Lakisha, she does the same thing every week. It's not that it's bad, it's just that I like to see some variety, and she doesn't really have it.

Melinda is similar in that she has talent, but it's pretty much the same each week, and I'd like to see if she can do something different. Of course, a lot of artists do the same thing all the time, but it's interesting to watch to see if they can do something outside their element.

And on and on it goes. Chris was middling, Haley was Haley and Phil was pretty horrible.

To the good news. Jordin was quite good, and Blake was as well. I liked the spin that he put on it. While I hate to say it, I actually sort of enjoyed Sanjaya. I would be amazed if it happened, but he might be around for a little while. Who would have thought?

I think Phil is probably done. This might have been his worst performance. I really don't like Haley - never have, and probably never will, and I'm getting very tired of Lakisha, so I'll take those three for my bottom picks.

Update: I'm really getting to think I can only pick two out of three these days. This time it was Haley and Phil. Chris was in the bottom three with them, and it was good old Legs that took the long trip home. We'll miss her. Or maybe not.
