Lost Recap: One of Us

As Jack, Kate and Sayid return to the beach camp, and they bring someone with them: Juliet. While Jack is happy about this (or at least, he's not really upset), we already established that Kate wasn't happy about it in Left Behind and frankly, Sayid isn't ever really happy about anything - but due to his suspicious nature, he's even less happy about this particular development.

Because of all the unhappiness - or perhaps in spite of it - we get to learn a bit about Juliet. What does this mean? Up until now, the flashbacks have all generally involved those on the flight (or those associated with them). But here, we see someone not associated with it in any way. At least, we don't think she was. So perhaps we are learning something new and exciting. Or maybe not. At least it's different.

Juliet and her sister, Rachel, pull up to a private airfield and this place is like a fort. Intimidating comes to mind, but these people take their security seriously. Juliet is met at the gate by Richard and general bottom-feeder Ethan, where he informs her that she'll need to go the rest of the way on her own. For security reasons. Not really sure that it's what she wants to do, she heads on anyway, convinced that she'll be gone for six months, and a monstrous gate closes behind her. Six Months. Right.

Back on the island, Juliet basically tells Sayid he isn't going to get anything out of her, and Jack is telling her that she will tell him when she's good and ready and not before. In other words: Nyah, nyah. As Kate and Sayid make their way back, Juliet asks Jack how much time he thinks that everyone will need. I'm thinking it'll be measured in decades. Jack thinks Sayid will be over it all by the time they get to the beach, which is a few hours from where they are now. Sure.

In the airport, Juliet gets a physical and a glass of orange juice. She knew not to drink the kool-aid, but no one said to watch out for the orange juice. Luckily, that's just what Richard does - straight up, he tells her that it's juice with a bunch of tranquilizers, and she probably wants to drink it. Amazingly, she does.

Speaking of the beach, Charlie is concerned because Claire seems to have gone deaf. At least she doesn't have to hear everything that's going on. Which isn't much, except for Hurley having a conversation with Juliet about being on the dock - you remember, when they took everyone else and told him to leave? It's almost like Hurley is trying to threaten her or act all badass or something. Since that didn't work, he steps it up a notch, and mentions that the last one to come over (that would be Ethan) is buried over yonder. How about Hurley? Threatening people. Hurley is absolutely the man.

Too bad it made Juliet think about Ethan, because that sends her back to the land of... well, the island. And Juliet is working with Ethan, and they have been unsuccessful again. And she is ready to give up. Shes wants to go home and see her sister give birth. Ben, ever the cheerer-upper, tells her that it won't happen, because the cancer has come back, and Rachel will be dead by then. Nice guy, that Ben. So rather than leaving, why not stay? What a jerk. Amazingly (like with the juice), she stays.

At that night's bonfire around Camp Lost, the group wants to decide what to do with Juliet. Fortunately - for Juliet - it's interrupted by Claire having a mean attack of the island disease that kills pregnant women, and that means that she has a chance to save herself, by offering to get Ethan's serum that will save her. No one believes her of course, but if it can save Claire, they'll give her a chance.

A chance is not what Ben has, because in this next flashback, Juliet tells Ben (after a rather disturbing scene where she is with Goodwin), she pulls out an x-ray and tells Ben that he has a tumor. That doesn't make Ben happy. Luckily for him, he's reading Carrie, and that means that it's book club time, and the plane is about to crash - a plane that has Jack on it. Lucky bastard.

Back on the beach, Juliet has returned from her midnight run to get the sacred serum, and she gives it to Claire. Claire is feeling better, almost immediately. But not before we get one more look at Juliet and Ben. In it, Juliet rehashes the plan...

"I drag Austen out into the jungle, handcuff myself to her, and then tell her I was gassed just like she was....Then they will take me back to the beach. I know you want me to go there, but after everything we've done to them, it's going to be a problem." Then Ben says, "We've activated the implant in Claire. She should be symptomatic within 48 hours. By the time you get there, you'll have a nice big crisis to solve." Ben adds, "Price is already on his way. You can pick them up at Ethan's old drop point. Tell Jack that you can save her. He trusts you. I'll see you in a week."

Nice.
