The Amazing Race Recap: Hong Kong, China

We're Trying to Make Love, Not War

After a first-place finish in Kuala Lumpur, Dustin and Kandice left in first place, with instructions to fly over 1500 miles to Hong Kong, at which point they should travel another 22 miles by taxi to Sun Wah Kiu Laundry.

At the empty airport, the beauty queens found that China Air had the earliest flight at 8:00am, arriving at 11:55am. The next flight was Malaysian Air, but it didn't get in until 12:55pm. However, the Malaysian Air counter opened at 4am, while the China Air counter opened at 5am - so they decided to camp out at Malaysian Air. An interesting choice.

Seeing Dustin and Kandice camped out at Malaysian air, Oswald and Danny walked downstairs to the Malaysia Air office instead of opting for the counter. This got them on the waitlist ahead of the beauty queens, who were waiting upstairs. Eric and Danielle also managed to get on the waitlist - upstairs.

Still beneath the radar - figuratively and literally, Oswald and Danny met up with Charla and Mirna before the China Air counter opened up, getting on that flight, also before the other two teams. Sneaky, sneaky. Oswald and Danny also promised their place in line to Charla and Mirna if they didn't use it. Double sneaky. As if that's not enough, Charla and Mirna made a deal with Eric and Danielle - no specifics, just that they wanted to make sure to get the best of Dustin and Kandice. Hat trick, anyone?

At 7:30am, Oswald and Danny were the only ones to get on the China Air flight, which gave them a great advantage. They also stood by their word and gave Charla and Mirna their spots on the Malaysia Air flight by giving them the priority waitlist code they had obtained earlier. Like My Name is Earl, it's a matter of karma.

Both of the all-girls teams managed to get on the Malaysian Air flight, but Eric and Danielle elected to change money, so by the time they got to the flight, it was completely booked, and they had to get on a later flight, which meant that they would be nearly three hours later than the other teams.

In Hong Kong, Oswald and Danny found the second Fast Forward of this race. They had to perform a stunt for an action movie to claim the Fast Forward. While they began suiting up for it, Charla and Mirna showed up at the laundry to find a Detour, where teams had to choose between Kung Fu Fighting and Lost in Translation.

In Kung Fu Fighting, the team must travel five miles to Tonkin Street and find a nearby building. Once there, they had to climb up an 11-story bamboo scaffold while avoiding an ongoing battle between stunt kung fu experts to reach the top and retrieve their next clue.

In Lost in Translation, the team must make their way four miles to Kowloon City and find Nga Tsin Wai Road. Once there, they had to search among hundreds of similar-looking Chinese signs for the specific sign shown in a photo in their clue. When they matched the photo with the correct store sign, the owner would hand them their next clue.

Both teams chose Kung Fu Fighting and accomplished the task quickly - though Dustin and Kandice were a bit faster, because Charla and Mirna couldn't decide which task to do and went back and forth once or twice.

On the Fast Forward, Danny and Oswald were both a bit leery of the stunt, but then they got in the car and went through a high-speed action stunt, and the car landed on its side before finishing, with instructions to head to the next Pit Stop at the Hong Kong Jockey Club with their gnome - for their efforts, they won a trip to Hong Kong.

After finishing the Detour, teams received a clue to visit the abandoned police headquarters, where they were met with a Roadblock. Here, one team member had to kick in doors until they found a room containing their next clue.

Kandice burst through doors, easily finding her clue, and Charla took care of the doors for their team. Eric and Danielle pulled close in the final moments, but they ultimately couldn't close the final gap. Luckily for them, it was a non-elimination leg.

  • Oswald and Danny are back on top, thanks to the Fast Forward.
  • Dustin and Kandice are looking very, very strong now.
  • Charla and Mirna continue to amaze, but for how long?
  • Eric and Danielle are hanging in there, but need to turn it up.

I'm glad that Oswald and Danny were not eliminated, but I'm not sure how long they'll be here. Fast Forwards are nice, but ultimately I don't think that they figure into the outcome very much. I think it more likely that Dustin and Kandice will continue to do well, and perhaps be the first all-female team, or maybe Eric and Danielle will come back from near elimination to make it happen.
