According to Jim Recap: What Lies Beneath

The kids go through a review to get funding for their extra-curricular activities. Kyle can't play trombone worth a lick, so he gets to throw it in the trash. Gracie wants to play soccer, and whether she is any good or not she gets out of the house for a few hours on the weekend, which gets Jim to sign the check. Ruby, however, actually has talent. She can tap dance, so she gets the check.

Later, Andy takes his metal detector out in the yard and looks for gold coins. He doesn't find any, but he does find a nickel. And then he finds Jim's wedding ring. Apparently Jim has been wearing a cheap imitation for the last year. Andy is so proud.

When Jim squirts Andy with the hose, Andy decides to get even by giving Cheryl the ring. Unfortunately, he doesn't think about his alibi, which means that he gets in trouble since he was there when the ring was lost, and he didn't say anything. Still, he gets some points for turning it in so Cheryl can get even now.

He's been swearing on the cheap ring for the last year and now she's ready to get even.

She makes cupcakes - deep, dark chocolate cupcakes, and you have to tell a deep, dark secret to get a cupcake. Andy tells that he lost a tie and replaced it and Cheryl never noticed. This doesn't get Jim to admit that he should have fessed up, even when Andy bites into the cupcake.

Dana comes clean about when she didn't tell the truth and how she lost a bracelet that she was given. That gets her a cupcake, but Jim still doesn't budge. Though he's starting to suspect that something is up. Or maybe he's just hungry.

When it come time for his confession, he says that he was on the roof and lost hope. Life just seemed a little bleak. He went downstairs, took a nap, and found hope. So he wants his cupcake. Then he swears on his ring (the fake one). Cheryl gives him a special cupcake. With the real ring on it.

Jim, thinking quickly, eats it so that there is no evidence. He's a genius.

When Jim naps, they run the metal detector over his belly and find that Jim actually swallowed it. Some 12 hours later, he runs to the bathroom, thinking he'll get away with it, only to be ambushed by Cheryl, Andy and Dana. Looks like he's busted after all. Too bad they had to watch him on the pot to do it.
