Heroes Recap: Chapter Seventeen: Company Man
I like Heroes. I really do. But the one complaint that I have (and the complaint that I hear most often from my wife) is that it jumps all over the place, which can make it tough to follow. I totally agree. This makes this episode one of my favorites. While it has a ton of information in it, and it does jump around a lot, it focuses like none other. Just awesome.
Radioactive Man Ted Sprague and Matt Parkman break into the Bennet home in Odessa, looking for something that will tell them who they are - or what they are. Or maybe who HRG is. Maybe they just want to steal stuff. I don't know. They are there. Let's move on.
As they try to get something, the Bennets come home. That means that someone is in trouble. It's suddenly a really big game of cat-and-mouse, as Parkman tries to figure out who knows what, as he reads the minds of HRG and Claire and tries to figure out what is going on. Just then, HRG grabs a gun out of a hidden compartment and Claire ends up getting shot. Good thing everyone agreed to tell Parkman that she can heal or there might be a big problem.
Upstairs, as they hide Claire so she can spit up the bullet and get back to her cheerful cheerleader self, Matt agrees to accompany HRG to Primatech Paper, while Ted keeps an eye on things at the house. It may not be a good idea to leave Ted alone, because he's unstable in so many ways. When Claire tries to rescue her mom and brother, she ends up fighting Ted, and gets a gnarly radioactive necklace, caused by his hands wrapped around her throat.
Just about then, the boss, Thompson, arrives and shoots Ted, who starts to implode. The Haitian comes in and gets the family to saftey. HRG and Matt come back in and try to slip a sedative into Ted, but they can't get close enough. Claire to the rescue again. She saves the day, but not the house, and gets a horrific sunburn. Her skin is just peeling off the bone, and all her neighbors get to see it. Thompson also gets to see just what HRG's little girl can do. Not a good idea, for we also got some sweet flashback action.
When HRG was but a young recruit, he learned (from an also-young Thompson) that he would be teamed with a "special". One Claude, who can turn invisible, and his cover will be a regional manager for Primatech Paper. We also see Kaito Nakamura giving a baby - who is apparently Claire - to HRG on the roof of the Deveaux building, explaining that if she exhibits any "special" abilities, he will need to give her back. Apparently that didn't happen.
Finally, we get two other awesome scenes. One where Claude is accused of subverting the company, and as a result, HRG shoots him. Claude turns invisible just as he falls over the side of a bridge. As we know, that didn't really take, because he's now hanging out with Peter. But we know why he doesn't trust HRG. And then we see that HRG brings a young Haitian boy to his home, where apparently he meets Mrs. Bennet for the first time. Scary that it's been happening for so long.
But what an episode!
