The Sopranos Recap: Chasing It

The more I watch this show, the more I realize that I really miss what it used to be (and I realize that it really isn't that any longer). It's almost like everyone came back to the HBO cash machine for one more season, and now they're just killing time until they get to the series finale. At least there isn't far to go. I just don't know if I can make it.

Anyway, if you didn't know that Tony had issues, you sure should by now. Only instead of having problems with interesting things like killing people or having sex outside of his marriage (not saying that I encourage those things - just that they are a lot more interesting to watch), he's got a thing with gambling. He goes to Atlantic City and wins on roulette. Instead of walking away with a nice stack, he takes it all and puts it on another number. He loses it. This is what he's reduced to. Ah well.

To make matters even worse, Tony has turned into Dr. Phil. That's probably not a very good title, being that he doesn't really like the Phil in his life - the one across the river. We'll call him Dr. Tony. When he finds out that Vito Jr. is acting up at school and his mom wants a hundred thousand to send him to some school, he balks. I can't say I blame him. Tony decides to bring Phil in on the action. Vito gets the short end of the stick, and is pulled out of his bed in the middle of the night. Poor kid.

Meanwhile, Tony tries to cover his losses with a bridge loan from Hesh, and Hesh isn't feeling very good about it. He doesn't have a problem with it, until Tony doesn't pay up. Then he isn't exactly sure how to ask Tony for the money. How do you ask a mafia boss for the money that he owes you? That makes things a little complicated. Hesh does get the vig on his money, but he's not happy taking that, and eventually Tony breaks down and brings some money to Hesh. In shopping bags.

Tony actually turns to Carmela. Now that he spec house has sold, she has some money that he wants her to "invest" with him. Of course, "invest" means "bet on the Jets". She doesn't, and Tony wins, so he's made that she didn't give him more money, so he could get more money. Things aren't good at home, either. Oh, how the mighty have fallen.

As this happens, Phil is having himself an inauguration party with Nancy Sinatra, showing that he's apparently doing just fine. And he doesn't want to hear anything about Vito Jr, either. This isn't going to turn out well. At least that is what we're hoping for, right?
